Iconic Therapeutics (Atlanta, GA) is developing hI-con1™, a fusion protein therapeutic invented at Yale by Drs. Alan Garen and Zhiwei Hu. While hI-con1 may have utility against cancer (solid tumors) and other diseases, development has been focused on its utility in treating the wet form of age-related macular degeneration (“wet AMD”), the leading cause of blindness in the elderly. Wet AMD is characterized by the invasion of pathological blood vessels into the eye, which, together with the fluid they leak, obscure vision. With a nimal testing and cGMP manufacturing completed, the Company took hI-con1™ into a Phase I human clinical trial in 2011, with positive results . Elm Street Ventures partner Mike Sherman was a co-founder of the company, which raised its first capital in 2003, and is the chairman of the board, having served as the company’s initial president. www.iconictherapeutics.com
